Add and manage products

Add and manage products

Add a product

Before adding your first product, let's familiarize ourselves with how product categories, tags, and attributes work.

Product categories

Product categories and tags work the same way as regular categories and tags when writing WordPress posts. They can be created, edited, and selected at any time. This can be done when you first create a product or when you return to edit a specific product or category/tag.

Attributes

They can be added per product, or you can configure global attributes for use by the entire store.

For more information, see: Product category management, tags and attributes.

Types of products

With the attributes, categories, and inventory management set up, we can start adding products. When adding a product, the first thing you need to decide is what type of product it is.

  • SimpleThis covers the vast majority of products you can sell. Simple products are shipped without options. For example, a book.
  • groupedA collection of related products that can be purchased individually and consists only of simple items. For example, a set of six drinking glasses.
  • On-lineOne that doesn't require shipping. For example, a service. Enabling this disables all shipping-related fields, such as shipping dimensions. A virtual product will also not trigger the shipping calculator in the cart and on the checkout page.
  • DownloadableActivate additional fields where you can provide a downloadable file. After a successful purchase, customers receive a downloadable file as a link in the order confirmation email. This is suitable, for example, for a digital album, a PDF magazine, or a photo.
  • External / Affiliate: one that you advertise and describe on your website but that is sold elsewhere.
  • VariableA product with variations, each of which may have a SKU, price, inventory options, etc. For example, a t-shirt available in different colors and sizes.
  • Other types of products can be added through extensions. For example, the extension WooCommerce Subscriptions (link available only in English) add new types of products as well as the WooCommerce Bookings.

Add a simple product

Adding a simple product is similar to writing a post in WordPress.

  1. Go to WooCommerce > Products > Add NewThere you'll find a familiar interface and you should feel right at home immediately.
  2. Enter a Name and a Product Outline.
  3. Go to the panel Facts & figures Product and select Downloadable (digital) or On-line (service) if applicable.

Note: Virtual products do not require shipping; an order containing virtual products will not calculate shipping costs.

Product details

The Product Data section is where you add most of the important data for your products.

General section

  • Price
    • Normal price: the regular price of the item.
    • Reduced priceThe discounted price of the item can then be scheduled for specific date ranges. The offer expires at 11:59 pm on the specified end date.
  • Tax
    • Tax status: taxable / shipping only / none.
    • Tax class: choose which tax class should be applied.

The inventory section lets you manage individual product inventory, define whether reservations are allowed, and more. This enables you to sell products and allows customers to add them to their cart to purchase.

Related Products Section

Using targeted selling and cross-selling, you can promote your products across multiple sellers. These can be added by searching for a specific product and selecting it from the dropdown list.

After adding, they are listed in the input field:

Targeted sales These are displayed on the product details page. These are products you might want to encourage users to buy, based on the product they are currently viewing. For example, if the user is viewing the coffee product listing page, you might want to display teapots on that same page as a targeted sale.

Cross-selling These are products displayed in the shopping cart that are related to the user's cart contents. For example, if a user adds a Nintendo Switch console to their cart, you can suggest they purchase a case when they reach the cart page.

GroupThis is used to make a product part of a bundled product. More information below: bundled product.

Attributes section

On the Attributes tab, you can assign details to a product. You'll see a selection box containing sets of global attributes you've created (for example, platform). Learn more at: Product category management, tags and attributes.

Once you've chosen an attribute from the selection box, click Add and apply the terms associated with that attribute (for example, Nintendo Switch) to the product. You can hide the attribute in the interface by leaving the visible checkbox unchecked.

Custom attributes can also be applied by selecting Custom product attribute in the selection box. These are added at the product level and will not be available in layered navigation or other products.

Advanced section

  • Purchase note: Enter an optional note to send to the customer after they purchase the product.
  • Order in the menu: position in which this product will be displayed when using custom order.
  • Turn on ratings: Enables / disables customer ratings for this item.

Brief product description

Add a summary. This usually appears next to the product images on the listings page, and the long description appears on the Product Description tab.

Video embeds can be used from version 3.1x onwards.

Taxonomies

On the right side of the Add New Product panel, you'll find product categories where you can place your product, similar to a standard WordPress post. You can also assign product tags in the same way.

Product Pictures

Add a product image and a product gallery.

Adjust the visibility options for the catalog and featured products

In the Publish panel, you can configure the Catalog visibility for your product.

  • In-store and in search results: visible everywhere, store pages, category pages and search results.
  • Only in store: visible on the store pages and in the category, but not in the search results.
  • Only in search results: visible in search results, but not on the store page or category pages.
  • Hidden: only visible on the individual product page and on no other page.

You can also set whether the product is promoted in product categories, targeted sales, and related products such as Featured ProductFor example, you can check the featured box for all the grouped products you sell.

Other ways to feature a product are described in the following section: Mark a product as Featured.

Add a bundled product

A bundled product is created in a very similar way to a simple product. The only difference is that you select grouped in the product type drop-down menu.

To create your grouped product, select "Grouped" from the product type dropdown menu.

Create the bundled product

  1. Go to: WooCommerce > Products > Add New.
  2. Enter a Product name for the Grouped product.
  3. Scroll down to Product Details and select Product grouped from the drop-down menu. The price and several other fields disappear. This is normal because a grouped product is a collection of "sub-products," which is where you add this information.
  4. Publish.

The grouped product remains an empty group. For this grouped product, you must:

  • Create products and add them.
  • Add existing secondary products.

Having the option to first create simple products and then add them to a grouped product, or to first create a grouped product and then add simple products, gives you the flexibility to add simple products to more than one grouped product.

Add products to the group

  1. Go to: WooCommerce > Products.
  2. Select the product grouped to which you wish to add products.
  3. Scroll down to Product Details and go to Related products.
  4. Choose Aggregated products and search for the product by typing in the field.
  5. Click on the products you want to add.
  6. To update.
  7. You can drag and drop to reorder the grouped products. Once you press UpdateThe new order will be displayed on the product page.

Add a virtual product

When adding a product SimpleYou can check the box On-line in the product type panel.

At the Product variableThis checkbox moves to each variation.

Enabling this disables all shipping-related fields, such as shipping dimensions. A virtual product will also not activate the shipping calculator on the cart or checkout page.

Add a downloadable product

When adding a simple product, you can check the box Downloadable in the product type panel. This adds two new fields:

  • File path: path or URL of your downloadable file.
  • Download limit: Limit the number of times the client can download the file. Leave blank for unlimited downloads.

To provide maximum flexibility, downloadable products also incur a shipping cost (ideal if, for example, you were offering both a packaged and a downloadable version of a product). You can also select the Virtual option if the downloadable product cannot be shipped.

Note: If the completed order email does not contain downloadable links, please refer to this Troubleshooting Guide (available in English only).

Add an external/affiliate product

Select "Third-party/affiliate product" from the product type dropdown menu. This removes unnecessary tabs, such as tax and inventory, and inserts a new field: Product URL. This is the destination where users can purchase the product. Instead of an "Add to Cart" button, they will see a button. Read more which directs them to this URL.

Add a variable product

Variable products are arguably the most complex product types. They allow you to define variations of a single product where each variation can have a different SKU, price, or stock level.

Query Product variable to obtain a guide on how to create a product with variations.

Duplicate a product

To save time, it is possible to use a product and duplicate it to create similar products with variations and other qualities.

Go to WooCommerce > Products Find the product you want to replicate in the list, then click Duplicate.

Delete a product

To remove a product:

  1. Go to: WooCommerce > Products.
  2. Find the product you want to remove.
  3. Scroll through the area below the product name and Click on Send to trash.

Mark a product as featured

To mark a product as featured, go to: Products > All products and select the star in the column HighlightsAlternatively, select Quick Edit and then the option Highlights.

Establish a featured product

  1. Go to: WooCommerce > Products.
  2. Select one categorykind of product y / o inventory status, or any combination of the three.

Order products

  3. Select one categorykind of product y / o inventory status, or any combination of the three.

product ID

Sometimes a product identification (ID) number is needed when using shortcodes, widgets, and links.

To find the ID, go to Products Then place your cursor over the product for which you need an ID. The product's identification number will be displayed there.

Allow reservations

If you are managing stock of a product, in the corresponding drop-down menu select whether you want to allow work?. Uses Advanced Notifications (purchase separately) to help notify someone other than the store manager when order reservations are received.

To allow reservations, the inventory status must be set to In stock even if the inventory quantity is 0 or less.

Most payment gateways charge immediately. If you want to wait to charge customers for an item until it's back in stock, use WooCommerce Waitlist (purchase separately) to send an email to all users, notifying them that the item is back in stock, with a link to purchase.
